The NMG Group is a global advisory and intermediary firm focused exclusively on the financial services sector. After establishing itself in 1992 as a firm for consulting actuaries in Singapore, NMG has expanded their suite of services and geographic presence worldwide, and is made up of three businesses:

  • NMG Consulting: a specialist consultancy focused on the investment, insurance and reinsurance industry
  • NMG Benefits: an employee benefit consulting and administration business in South Africa and Namibia
  • NMG Capital: a private equity business investing in entrepreneurial financial services entities

The majority of NMG’s clients comprise financial institutions and employers and currently, NMG has more than 800 employees in 18 cities, covering all inhabited continents.

Using SmartUp

In 2019, NMG began using the SmartUp platform with the setup of the NMG Consulting community. Early on in the Covid-19 pandemic, the South African government announced a nationwide lockdown to contain its spread. As a result, the staff of NMG Benefits found themselves needing access to a learning engagement platform essentially overnight. The SmartUp team supported the initiative and set up the NMG Benefits community within 48 hours before the lockdown measures were implemented. In 2021, NMG expanded its pool of communities on SmartUp with the setup of the NMG Botswana community.

The content within the NMG communities covers a wide range of topics. Some examples include soft skills such as emotional intelligence, leadership, and personal resilience among others. Additionally, SmartUp is being used to communicate business updates, guides on how to use software, industry-specific compliance, and more.

The Numbers

Across the three NMG communities on SmartUp, more than 800 users have consumed more than 10,000 pieces of content. The content completion rate across the three communities averages out at a healthy 84.3%.

The SmartUp platform is exceptionally user friendly and has significantly improved our current training and information-sharing processes at NMG Group. We started off using the platform for compliance/mandatory training and quickly expanded into all sorts of different content, including sharing business insights, systems training, how-to guides, thought leadership pieces, leadership courses, change management essentials etc. The SmartUp platform puts a fresh slant on the more traditional ‘online training’ – keeping employees engaged and motivated every step of the way. So much so, that many of our employees now create and share their own content without any nudge from us at all!
